... Agios Gordios beach, Corfu - Buckets and spades … and scuba divers

A quiet sandy bay, lush and green, with a few rooms to let and some tavernas below Pelekas: that - until recently - was the setting at Kontogialos, one of the most beautiful beaches on the western side of Corfu island. But the whole picture changed when the Pelekas Beach, a new luxury hotel, opened here a few years ago, attracting much greater crowds. Yet even today there are still some quiet areas, especially down by the rocks at the left end of the beach. Beautiful fine damp sand that doesn't stick to the skin, and water that deepens gradually - but watch out for currents.
Take a look at the great rock that dominates the seaward approach to the beach: legend has it that it is a corsair ship, turned to stone by the curse of a woman whose child was taken by the pirates. The beach is organised and, thanks to the mayor's initiative, offers extra facilities for disabled people. There are canoes and pedalos available for hire. Although not a particularly fashionable place, there are a number of reasonable places to eat - our recommendation would be the taverna "Naftis", for an afternoon ouzo and mezedes right by the water. (18 km from Corfu town).
